One of the most dramatic ways of changing a room around is by papering its walls. Nowadays most companies produce what is typically called a wall covering material which does not only come in varied colours and stylistic designs, but also in diverse finishes, from matte, to textured through to shimmery and woven.
Materials used in fine wall coverings vary, but at Tanti Interiors we pride ourselves in steering clear of plastic-coated wall coverings or any form of plastic inclusion in the range of wall coverings we provide our clients. This also means that these wall coverings are stringently non-toxic and have fire retardant qualities. One of the higher-end brands on board is Omexco. This brand even goes as far as ensuring its wall coverings come with a maritime certificate so that they are compatible with use within yachts and ship cabins.
A number of the finer and more up-class wall coverings are sold by the metre rather than by the roll and this in order to avoid wastage and allow the installers to cover a wall without too many joints. This method is of course very effective in that it makes for a neater and smoother finish. You won't even know it is wall covering!
Then again, we carry some very special wall coverings that are traditional old-style wallpaper. These are made by a typically English brand called Sanderson Home which specialises in delicately decorated, rigorously handcrafted paper for some exceptionally unique interior effects.
Some designs are especially breezy and fresh, as in the case of ‘Maris’ from the Port Isaac collection. It “shows sea urchins carefully placed in rows to create an all over geometric effect. The intricate dots have been individually hand painted with a delicate mix of matt and metallic inks giving a hint of lustre.” Another lovely wallpaper is called ‘Seakelp’ and features hand painted seagulls which are created with thick layers of gouache paint for an effective brush stroke texture.
The ‘Porcelain Garden’ collection from Sanderson Home is more romantic in character. Re-inventing designs from hand-painted Chinese wallpaper of the Victorian period, blossoms and birds are painted in soft watercolours and pastels.
Whether you decide to cover all your room’s four wall, go for a feature wall or perhaps consider a ceiling coverage, the options are myriad and your favourite stylist will give you the kind of advice that will make all the difference to ensure your summer project is a success.
