Objects with a history have character which, contrary to new ones, is ingrained in them. The sign of age and patina translates into that certain quality which is alien to the freshly purchased item, just out of the store.

The fact that antique shops and auction houses exist and flourish is proof of the fact that there is a market hankering for the unique item that can be slotted in a contemporary home style and get away with it. The issue lies in deciding which of grandpa's old furnishings or antique items should be kept to contribute towards a successfully neat and stylish space. Because ultimately the fear of the home owner remains ever-present...... that of including something which jars with the rest and destroys the entire feel of the space.
What is important is to keep items that happily complement what you already own. Take an old sitting room suite. The traditional settee, two armchairs and pair of lady chairs are so very typical of old living room scenarios. In a small modern apartment you probably do not have enough space for the settee to fit in, and the two armchairs will look way too bulky. But what about revamping just one of the armchairs with fabric that has a clean matching design or colour to your living room? It can house a stack of fun pillows and sit neatly by that French window. And what about revamping the lady chairs and placing them in the bedroom, one next to each side table or both at the foot of your bed?
A lot of old crockery tends to get handed down and passed on. Much of it can be pretty cheap looking and of no consequence. But what about that pink glass decanter with its swirls of gold design that is so very elegant? And the pair of crystal glasses that catch the light so interestingly? While they are small pieces, they can add a touch of class and curiosity, becoming conversation starters at dinner parties.
The list of antique items that can be sourced and selected can be as long as you wish - chandeliers, foot stools, pillows, carpets, paintings, mirrors, showcases, tablecloths. It may take some time dedictaed to hunting and searching, but once you find the right object, it will definitely become the star attraction of your room.
