You probably sit in it every day at some point, perhaps you also sleep in it every so often, and if you count the number of hours you and your family spend in it in a week, you`d be amazed at just how much you really `live` in it.

The living room is, after the kitchen, probably the busiest place in your home. And this can mean that at times it can look somewhat worse for wear and require some serious attention. Interior designer Kenneth Tanti is roped in to share some quick-fix solutions that will help with a bit of livening up to transform your living room from humdrum to eye-catching once again.
Kenneth starts by recommending we take a good long look at the textiles in the room. “Cushions and rugs are always some of the first things to catch the eye and conveniently, the easiest and quickest things to turn around, very versatile to play around with.” It is simply matter of getting a set of new cushion covers; replacing cushions which have lost their plumpness; covering a faded sofa with a patterned throw; changing the rugs or adding a few more to the room. Diversify the colour palette to incorporate new punches of colour. Add character to a boring corner with a statement wall including ornamental wallpaper, a pair of wall sconces, a large potted plant.
While talking of these easy changes, Kenneth draws upon his long experience working in people’s homes, citing the biggest mistake people make when setting up a living room. “I have absolutely no doubt about that – the major mistake is basing and focusing on the position of the TV set in the room. If you act as though everything revolves around it, you will be pretty limited in your design approach.”
And being well-travelled, Kenneth recalls one of the most impressive living rooms he has ever lounged in, “While holidaying in Mallorca, I rented a beautiful Finca with a seven-metre-high pitched ceiling. I had never seen anything like it. This living room was stunning and I would sit on the sofa and stare up at the structure in admiration. At night the lighting effect was magnificent too. So that is also something to keep in mind – add, alter, move decorative lighting around to lighten up corners of the room which are presently dull and unappealing. Transforming your living room needn’t be an impossible mission, nor an expensive one – it is all a matter of observation and of thinking outside the box.”
